LAKE TO LAKE TRIATHLON begins in Loveland, Colorado at the beach area of North Lake Park. There are three categories competing. Olympic Distance- 1.5k swim- 30 mile bike- 10k run Sprint Distance- 750 yard swim- 15 mile bike- 5k run Aquabike- 1.5k swim- 30 mile bike Within the two distances Olympic and Sprint there are also relay categories- relays may be two or three participants competing. The event begins at 7:00am with the Olympic Distance event. There will be 5-6 waves that enter that water 4 minutes apart. The Sprint distance will begin at 7:30am with 5-6 waves leaving 4 minutes apart. The number of waves is contingent upon the number of entries. Participants per wave are typically 50-75. The purpose of the event is to provide athletes with the opportunity to compete in a safe and organized event. This event has first time competitors as well as experienced/ elite athletes. This event also donates 1,000’s of dollars per year to local non-profits groups that help run the event on race day. Post swim- The athletes jog to the transition area, where their bikes are racked. Each athlete leaves the transition area and begins the bike portion of the event. The athletes cover the course they are entered to compete in. Post bike- The athletes re-enter the transition area, rack their bike, change their shoes and commence to run. Unless they are entered in the aquabike, in which case they head to the finish line. Participants competing in relays, do their “hand off” in the transition area. Transition area is for athletes and volunteers/ staff only. Once the athletes have completed their swim-bike-run they are hydrated, they congratulate one another and they have opportunity to enjoy a post race meal. Post race includes food, awards and music. Volunteers are posted along the entire route to provide encouragement and to aid in safety of the event. There are 220 volunteers. Volunteers areas include the Run-Swim-Bike-Finish line- transition area- packet pick up- set up-tear down- lunch serving- awards- music-parking lot. Bike coordinator on the Olympic course and bike coordinator on the Sprint course. USA Triathlon race officials on the bike courses as well. All of the flaggers on the bike course are certified and provided by the traffic control company. I have never counted how many observers are at the event venue watching the participants. There are no observers on the bike course. There are no areas designated for observing on the bike courses. I have listed 800 participants. The last two years there were approximately 550 participants competing. I don’t want to underestimate number of participants. The numbers are split close to 50/50- Olympic Distance vs. Sprint Distance.
