Event Information
Permit Type(s): Parks and Open SpacesType of Event: Education
Location:
Eagle's Nest Open Space
Description:
The Special Use Permit will support access to Eagle’s Nest Open Space by students in Colorado State University’s RS432 Rangeland Measurements and Monitoring and RS532 Rangeland Ecosystem Sampling courses at permanently marked transects in the North Middle Pasture used by these courses for the past 5+ years. On 9/21/2023, students will gain experience estimating plant production using the comparative yield method (method requires clipping a small amount of vegetation for calibrating visual estimates) and assessing plant composition using the dry-weight rank method (non-destructive method). On 9/28/2023, students will gain experience estimating livestock utilization using two different methods (height-weight method, landscape appearance method); both methods are largely non-destructive (some biomass clipping is done to calibrate visual production estimates). Data collected, along with information about livestock grazing, if available, will provide students experience performing calculations to estimate stocking rates using several different methods, as well as range condition relative to the historic climax plant community based on the NRCS Ecological Site Description. As in past years, we will park two 12-passenger CSU vans and 3-5 private vehicles in the Eagle’s Nest parking lot and walk down the two-track road to the cairns marking the three transects. There will be no more than 40 students, 1 teaching assistant, and 1 instructor at the site on either date as part of these activities. Students will be instructed to respect the site and minimize their impacts (remove all materials/equipment prior to departure, etc.). Although we have not had issues in the past (to my knowledge), the instructor and teaching assistant will monitor students to ensure proper use of the site.
