Survey of the emergence of the cicada, Platypedia putnami is conducted up to 30 days between May 1st and June 30th each year for 2023, 2024, and 2025. This is a continuation of the same survey that has been conducted on Horsetooth Falls Trail since 2009. It is a continuation of Special Use Permit # 5961 from 2022. I have applied for 3 years, as the survey will end in 2025, resulting in a publication in a scientific journal. The survey is conducted by walking the trail and collecting the nymphal exuvia (shed skins) of the emerging cicada that are within 1 meter of of the trail. A sample of up to 25 adult cicadas with be collected by hand, if the populations allow. Of the past 14 years of survey, half resulted in no exuvia collected, several years between 1-20 exuvia collected and 3 years resulted in 100-300 exuvia collected. Projections for 2023 and 2024 will result in 0-20 exuvia and 2025 will result in more than 100 exuvia. All exuvia collected and adult voucher specimens will be deposited into the C.P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity at CSU.
I request exemption from the $25 fee and the insurance requirement as I am the sole participant and entry is covered by Annual Passes. This is a personal activity that is no different than any other personal activity on the trail of the open space.
