Description:
Hello Larimer County:
As part of the 2022 Geological Society of America Connects Conference held in Denver, I am leading an educational geologic field trip covering the rocks of the Big Thompson Canyon on Thursday October 13th. I’d like to use Devil’s Backbone Open Space in the following ways as part of the field trip.
1) As an initial field trip stop that provides vault toilets and a covered lecture space. We would arrive at about 9am and stay no more than 1 hour and lecture to the participants using the covered lecture pavilion adjacent to the parking lot. We will only use the covered lecture space and the vault toilets, we will not use the trail system.
2) As a final field trip stop that provides vault toilets and a covered lecture space. We would arrive at about 5pm and stay no more than 1 hour and lecture to the participants using the covered lecture pavilion adjacent to the parking lot. We will only use the covered lecture space and the vault toilets, we will not use the trail system.
There are currently about 20 participants signed up for the field trip, with a maximum of 45, I expect about 30 participants by the time registration closes. We would travel in 2 or 3 fifteen passenger vans, depending on final numbers.
As this is an educational field trip, I would like to request that the special use application fee be waived.
I have attached the requested insurance certificate.
Thank you and please let me know of any questions.
Cheers,
Graham Baird

Trip Description:
The Paleoproterozoic rocks of the southwestern United States, often referred to as Yavapai-Mazatzal provinces, records the formation and modification of a large swath of continental crust at ~1.8-1.6 Ga. One model explains crust generation by the successive accretion of juvenile island arcs. While another model explains crust generation by repeated cycles of juvenile or evolved arc accretion alternating with slab rollback that creates extensional back-arc basins. Distinguishing these models is problematic as the first-order characteristics of the crust formed by either model is essentially identical and includes widespread polymetamophic clastic sedimentary rocks with subduction zone related plutons. The Big Thompson Canyon and surrounding areas offers excellent exposures of a wide variety of polymetamophic clastic sedimentary rocks, subduction zone related plutons, amphibolitic rocks, and granitic pegmatites, so it is a perfect location to study such rocks and consider these competing models. The fieldtrip will present typical outcrops of the common rocks and data from a number of techniques, such as zircon U-Pb and oxygen isotope analysis, U-Th-total Pb monazite geochronology, bulk rock geochemistry, and crustal seismic anisotropy. Together they will provide the chronology of events and the regional tectonic context.
