Description:
Continuation of Special Event Permit #5827 from 2021.

Each year since 2009, I have conducted of survey for the emergence of the cicada, Platypedia putnami along the Horsetooth Falls Trail at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space. The survey is conducted by walking the trail each day, counting the number of cicadas that emerged since the previous day, by collecting the exuvia (nymphal skins) within one meter of the trail. Exuvia collected are sexed and mounted on pins. Specimens will be deposited at the CP Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity at CSU. Up to 50 adults will be hand collected as voucher specimens and deposited at the Museum. The only equipment used is a clipboard and data sheets. No off trail travel is needed, and no nets or other visual insect collecting equipment is utilized.

I am requesting exemption from insurance requirements, as I am the only participant, and preforming activities as normal visitors do while walking at Horsetooth Open Space. I will follow all required entry and parking permits.

Backgound: This will be the 14 year of this survey. Large emergences of this cicada occurred in 2009, 2013, and 2021. The 2021 emergence was a repeat of the 2009 emergence, in still and location, showing a possible 12 year cycle. I expect no significant emergence in 2022. If the 2013 emergence repeats in 2025, this will confirm a 12 year cycle, with the likelyhood of multiple broods of this species occurring at Horsetooth Open Space.
