We are building a new home on our private property this year. The primary construction method -- straw bale construction -- is not the most conventional method, and so as part of the build, we plan to host a hands-on educational experience for other straw bale enthusiasts to learn the methods as they consider building their own homes.
Our Straw Bale Building Workshop will be conducted by nationally-known expert Andrew Morrison, who has been conducting similar workshops for over 25 years. Approximately 40 Registrants will gather on our private property, with most registrants camping on-site for the duration of the week-long event.
Registrants are expected to arrive at the site on Saturday, July 10, and most will depart on Saturday, July 17. Some may volunteer to remain after to assist with plastering of all straw bale walls and to take advantage of that learning opportunity.
7.7.1 - Potable water for the event and Registrants will come from the well on our private property. The well was tested prior to our purchase of the property in Fall 2019.
7.7.2 - At least two (2) portable rental toilet facilities (

Reviewing Agency Comments/Status
Email the Special Events Coordinator regarding this application.
Status: ApprovedComments: Approved on two conditions:
1) County building permit 21-RES0130 for the home must be issued by that time. It has not yet received Larimer County plan review approval; there are many outstanding corrections needing to be addressed. No work may proceed until the permit is issued.
2) A homeowner working on their own home may do their own electrical and plumbing work. Anyone else performing electrical or plumbing work must be properly state-licensed. People working on the straw bale home as volunteers or workshop attendees may work on any portion of the construction except the electrical and plumbing portions, subject to approval by the General Contractor obtaining the permit.

Status: ApprovedComments: I would like to know if the applicant has a plan for trash disposal and food storage to mitigate against conflicts with bears.

Larimer County Emergency Management
Livermore Fire Protection District
Status: ApprovedComments: This event should advise participants that emergency services may be a long time in responding and they should plan on taking care of their medical necessities. Since the even is planned during a dry part of the year, precautions must be taken to eliminate possible wildfire. All fires must be contained in a well made fire-pit, and must be of a small size for recreation, not for the disposal of trash or slash. Additionally, severe storms, wind, lightning, heavy rain, and, hail are dangerous and likely at this time of year and the "event" should have a plan to address such.
