This event will be an educational geology hike starting at Coyote Ridge Natural Area and hiking through Rimrock Open Space and into Devil's Backbone Open Space. The hike will go approximately .7 miles down the Indian Summer Trail before turning around and heading back the way it came.
The hike leader requests permission to take the group slightly off trail, following Leave No Trace principles, to view specific rock formations as part of the hike.
Here is the program theme and description:
Theme - Connecting with our local geology deepens our sense of home and place.
Description - Geology doesn't stop at Natural Area boundaries. But we are blessed to get a full-scope look of northern foothills geology by the fortunate juxtaposition of Fort Collins Coyote Ridge Natural Area and Larimer County's Devils Backbone Open Space. This will be a walk through time starting with the Pierre Shale - the bedrock upon which most of Fort Collins is built - and ending with the Precambrian crust - the rocks forming there foundation of Colorado. Along the way we will discuss rock identification, geologic environments, topography, resource use and connections to significant events in geologic history.
The event will be run by trained City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Volunteer Naturalists, who will be carrying all necessary first aid and emergency supplies.
