Red Mountain Open Space
I am a graduate student at the University of Wyoming, and am requesting permission to collect aquatic insect larvae of the mayfly species Hesperophylax occidentalis from Sand Creek in the Red Mountain Open Area. This site was recommended by Dr. Kondratieff at Colorado State University as a location with large populations of this species. I hope to collect about 100 individuals as early as possible in March, 2020. This would be a one-time collection that would take about two hours. Larvae will be hand picked out of leaf litter, with very minimal disturbance to the stream. This collection can be conducted out of view of any other visitors, and will not make use of any park facilities or resources. These larvae would be used for a study at the University of Wyoming investigating the habitat requirements of aquatic shredders.
