I would like to collect ponderosa pine cones for a study evaluating the relative effects of environmental conditions and maternal genetics on seedling establishment and growth. This year is a mast year for ponderosa pine, meaning the trees are producing many more cones than usual and thus is an ideal time to collect some for research purposes. Horsetooth Mountain is an ideal location to collect ponderosa pine cones for this study as it is near the lower elevational limit of their range and thus will provide a contrast in environmental conditions to higher elevation sites that I am collecting from. I plan to collect approximately 200 cones from 10 trees (20 cones/tree). I will only collect from trees that have an abundance of cones. To collect the cones, I will clip them with a pole pruner, causing minimal damage to the rest of the tree. I will tag each tree with a nail and tree tag in order to identify which trees have been collected from. I will be the only person going out to collect cones and it will only take me one day to sample the 10 trees.

I would also like to core each tree I collect cones from, to collect data on age and annual growth patterns. This has no lasting long term effects on the tree.
