Horsetooth Mountain Open Space
Preston Middle School annual Moonlight Horsetooth Hike. Organized by the Preston Outing Club, this hike seeks to expose students and family members to the open spaces of Larimer County in a unique way. Preston Staff will chaperone the event with assistance from parent volunteers. Staff and Parents will pay park entrance fees. Preston Staff will organize the group at the Trailhead at 5:00 PM. We will discuss procedures for the hike including, trail etiquette, buddy system, litter prevention and clean up, and a timeline of events. Staff will collect a final count of participants and head up the trail. Group will hike the standard hiking trail to Horsetooth Rock, then climb the rock via the north trail. Group will observe the sunset and moon rise from the top of the Rock. Parents and Staff will usher students safely down from the Rock before heading down the Service Road. Parents will know to pick students up at or around 10:00 PM. Preston Staff will stay at TH until all students are picked up. Trash collected during the hike will be transported out by group leader.

Status: ApprovedComments: It was acknowledged that the permission slip included special instructions for appropriate trail attire/footwear for hiking and weather, as well as lights, water and snacks.
Since the event occurs over dusk hours, we would recommend means for protection from vectors such as mosquitoes which may carry West Nile Virus. This could include advising students to protect themselves with covering clothing or various mosquito repellents.
