Devil's Backbone Open Space
The University of Northern Colorado Geol 201 - Physical Geology class would like to ask permission to hold part of their fall geology field trip at the Devil's Backbone Open space on Saturday September 28, 2019 or on Saturday October 5, 2019 in the case of poor weather on the September 28. The field trip is a required component of the Geol 201 class. Students will be lectured on the geology of the area, identify rocks in the parking area using just visual observations, and take a short hike around the horse trail to the bridge on the wild loop and return to the parking area. All hiking will strictly be kept to these trails only and students will provide right-of-way to all other visitors to the open space. No rock hammers will be used, nor will any samples be collected. Following the approximate 1 hour time of instruction, we will then use the Pavilion for about a half hour for a short quiz to assess student understanding of presented material on the field trip. I request that the application fee be waived as this is an academic use of the area.
Attached is a liability release waiver each student will sign prior to the field trip.
