Fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea) is a moth whose caterpillars feed in large clusters on wild and cultivated trees where they form large webs. This is not an endangered species and in some places it’s considered a pest that can defoliate an entire tree. Our lab has worked on the ecology and evolution of this moth for over 5 years and we have already done some research along the Front Range, but we would like to collect some caterpillars in others areas of Colorado. There is a record of occurrence of this moth in Larimer County in the South Bay campground of Horsetooth Reservoir and I would like to collect some caterpillars that I may find there. I plan to collect around 5 caterpillars from each web, which usually has 100 or more caterpillars, so I will not affect the population nor the plant. These caterpillars usually are found during the summer and early fall months along roads and rivers. My project is a 2-year study that will end on July 2021, so I will be collecting caterpillars this year, 2020 and 2021.

My visits will be periodic, perhaps during the weekdays and once per week or twice per month, and I will stop collecting by October or mid-November. I will have very little impact on visitors as I will be moving from tree to tree. I will have information brochures (attached) about my research and will be willing to speak with visitors about my activities and study.
