The Ramble Rides are supported bikepacking events. This permit request is for a women's only event and the first year for this particular event. Ramble Rides, in general, are in their 4th year and have been approved by Larimer County in the past. Processes and operational efforts will be the same across all events submitted in 2019 (Women's Ramble, Steamboat Ramble, Fort Collins Ramble).

The rider limit is capped at 60 in order to limit the impact on National Forest lands, campgrounds and communities we travel through. This small group also eases traffic concerns and improves our ability to manage safety for riders on the route. Unlike other bicycle events or races, the small groups do not travel in a “pack” or peloton. Due to the nature of bikepacking, the riders break off into groups of 4-8 and travel at slower speeds. We find this aspect helps to limit impact and issues on backcountry roads as the small groups are easily passed if needed. Additionally, we use MUTCD/DOT event signage pursuant to NFS requirements in order to alert nonparticipants to an event. These are placed each day by the lead vehicle and picked up by sag vehicle.

Road rules apply and riders are required to wear helmets and follow all local traffic laws.

Riders leave each morning by 8am and cover approximately 50-60 miles each day with several aid stations and lunch spot on the route. This equates to camp arrival around 3-4pm. Camps are catered and riders are given dinner and breakfast each morning.

Rides are fully supported with several motorcycle support, and a minimum of three vans, able to sag multiple riders at a time.

Comments: I have reviewed the food service in the past which will be implemented this time as well. Food is purchased locally then prepared in the wilderness at the camp sites. The same chef has provided information on the camp kitchen setup. Food must be sourced from commercial, approved sources...for example: no raw dairy products, no food prepared under Cottage Food Act (home prepared baked goods, jams, salsa, etc), only USDA or equally inspected meats, etc.
The actual food prep and service at the camp sites is exempt from licensing but shall follow all food safety requirements in regards to temperatures, safe food handling (handwashing, gloves, sanitized surfaces), cooking temperatures, etc. Please see interpretive memo link below:

Comments: We currently have planned maintenance along the proposed route(s) on the date(s) of the event. We begin work on CR 23 from CR 38E north on 5/17/2019. Since this event occurs on a regular work day, we are unable to guarantee that participants will entirely avoid traversing surfaces that have recently, or are then currently scheduled, to receive maintenance. At the time of the event, portions of the route(s) may traverse roads that have recently received repairs or surface maintenance. The surface maintenance techniques may include asphalt overlay, chip seal and seal coat. If the event coordinator will contact Jerry Macklberg,, Materials Manager 970-498-5662 thirty days prior to the event, we will coordinate our work in the area as best we can to accommodate the event without conflict. Event promoters are reminded that they are not to post event signs on traffic sign posts within the public road Right-Of-Way or paint on the surface of the road.
