We intend to look for Rocky Mountain wood ticks (Dermacentor andersoni) in northern Colorado. Our research aims to describe the ecological distribution of this tick, and to investigate the prevalence of two pathogens: Powassan virus, and Colorado tick fever virus.
The method of collection is to use a flannel blanket that is dragged along trail-side vegetation. Ticks attach themselves to the flannel, and then they are removed and taken to CSU for pathogen screening. Impacts upon vegetation are minimal, and we do not use any markers that would interfere with the recreational use of the Open Spaces.
So far, we have found a single tick at Hermit Park (in 2017) but we would like to pursue additional sampling to 1. Increase our sample size at Hermit park, and 2. Confirm that ticks are not present at the other low-altitude (comparatively) sites.
We intend to compile data from Larimer County Open Spaces, Rocky Mountain National Park and National Forest lands and will share this data with all of these agencies.
