Larimer County Extension Advisory Committee
November 4, 2009
The meeting was held in the Extension Office meeting room in Fort Collins. Those present were Suzanne Jarboe-Simpson, Jesse Mae Hendrickson, David Lee, Trena Anastasia, Ralph Bender, Brenna Tindall, Kristina Meyers, Dixie Dick, Mel Hilgenberg, Pam Harrold, Extension Director Laurel Kubin, Extension Agents Nora Garza and Edie McSherry, and Fred McClanahan, Jr.
The meeting was called to order at 8:05 a.m. Introductions were made. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Edie McSherry, Extension Agent, Nutrition, Health and Food Safety, reported on the Food Safety program in Larimer County:
Estimates of foodborne illnesses in the U.S. each year:
76 million people become ill
1 in 4 people will suffer from foodborne illness
5,000 cases result in death
$7 billion per year in medical care and lost productivity
Increase in foodborne illness due to:
Newly identified or recognized as foodborne pathogens
Associated with new food vehicles
Spread worldwide with transport of food
Increased consumption of raw and minimally processed foods
Increased population with compromised immune systems
Food preparation skills decreasing
Extension Master Food Safety Advisor Volunteers:
Master Food Safety Advisor volunteers extend Colorado State University Extension’s education programs in food safety and food preservation to adults and youth of Larimer County.
In the Food Safety Works classes for food service workers, Edie covers these topics:
Preventing Foodborne Illness
Food Temperature Control
Preventing Cross Contamination
Preparing/Serving Food Safely
Cleaning and Sanitizing
Nora Garza, Extension Agent, Food Stamp Nutrition Educator, reported on the Food and Nutrition Education program:
This USDA nutrition assistance program plays a vital role in helping to improve nutrition in the nation, particularly among low-income individuals. The FANE Program is an Extension program that is also funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The program was established to improve the likelihood that Food Stamp Program participants and applicants will make healthy choices within a limited budget.
Impacts of the FANE Program:
- 82% of graduates reported a positive change in some aspect of eating habits
- 44% more often planned meals in advance
- 56% more often used "Nutrition Facts" on the food label to make food choices
- 65% less often ran out of food before the end of the month
- 50% more often used a list for grocery shopping

· Committee asked to arrive by 11:30 a.m. to greet guests

Dr. Jim Klett – Horticulture / Master Gardeners
Keith Webber – Financial Education
Katie Harper – Nutrition
Aeriel Belk – 4-H
· Diane Kern is the new 4-H Horse Program Coordinator
· "C" is for Cookie, the United Way fundraiser that Extension sponsored was a success.
· The 2008-2009 4-H Year has ended. The annual Achievement Night is November 4.
· New enrollment for 4-H is underway.
· The 2009 Farmers' Market was very successful.
· Dollar Works 2 Train-the-Trainer will be taught by Extension at eight sites in Colorado.
Trends and Issues
There is an opportunity to apply for a 3-year term on the State Extension Advisory Committee. There are two 2-day meetings per year – 1 in Fort Collins and 1 at another location in Colorado. Those interested in being nominated are Pam Harrold and Dixie Dick.
The meeting adjourned at 9:50 a.m.
Next meeting will be Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in the meeting room of the Larimer County Extension Office.
